The Basics of Merchant Accounts and Credit Card Processing

However, if you’ve never dealt with online credit card processing, you may not be certain how to go about setting up your website to accept online payments.  The good news is that it isn’t that difficult at all.  In fact, it’s fairly easy.

First, you’ll need to find a good credit card processing company.  There are many out there, but not all of them provide the same types of services.  Some allow your customers to use more credit cards than others, while some may charge higher fees than others.  You’ll want to find information on a number of different credit card processing companies so you can compare and contrast and decide which is the best for you.  It’s important, too, that you only look at payment gateways, as these sites are sometimes called, because offer rates that are lower than companies that don’t actually process credit card transactions.  These other companies may allow your customers to pay by credit card, but they’re going to charge some sort of fee, and then the company that they pass the order off to is going to charge yet another fee for processing the transaction.  If you work directly with a payment gateway company, you cut out the middleman and save money.

Once you’ve selected a credit card processing company, they should give you all the instructions and resources you need to set up your account and get the payment feature onto your website.  Most of the time, all it involves is adding a little extra code to your site.  If you’re uncertain about how to do this, the company’s support line can help.
